Jane Eyre was on at the Uni cinema last night.
James was heartily unimpressed by it. I do not wish to watch it again but I was quite charmed by it.
The costumes and setting were both absolutely superb, I found myself transfixed by all the details, it is a visually stunning film especially in the way light is treated. I think at times I forgot to care about what was being said and just looked at how their faces created beautiful shapes in shadows.
The plot was one that I barely knew (I’d asked Mum for a synopsis on Thursday) so it played out fairly well for me although it is quite a dull story all things said. I did not find myself too drawn into caring where Jane ended up but I suppose it was a fitting resolution. All the cast were suited to their roles and I enjoyed recognising so many faces.
Yet, it was too long, I got rather fidgety as it progressed. The cinematography doesn’t make up for a lack of engagement. I would have preferred things to move a little faster and maybe have wrapped up in 90mins instead of 120.
