Another thing.

Also, regarding my once ‘friendship’ with Alex.

I met Alex in 2009 at the first SitC, but I had at that point been in contact with him for a year or so because I was a fan and had voluntarily decided to design the Parrot Stories art for him as a fun project for myself and to feel part of the wider Nerdfighter community. (He later gave me £200 as a thank you for drawing his album art and the Harry Moon face.)
Our conversations were ever only about his music and my art. For that I am thankful.

Anyway, we were vaguely friends from 2008 onwards. When I started Uni in 2009 I went to stay at his house (while he still lived with his Mum) and while Chartjackers stuff was happening. It was in the October when we had a week scheduled to go see art in museums and Alex had offered his spare room to stay in for a night. We went to a load of art galleries and just hung out around London. I stayed in the spare room (he offered to share a bed, because that’s what everyone else who stayed over did, but I was in a new relationship with James, the same James I’m with now, 4 and a half years later) but I declined and said the spare would suit me fine.
The next day we hung out with the Chartjackers while they filmed for the 4:01 show, Alex and Charlie and I got food and I got my train back to Uni.

We hung out again at 2010 SitC and again the next October when I stayed at his and Charlie’s flat and stayed on the blow up mattress they had for guests. Once again we had a fun two days going around art galleries and chatting and listening to music. Nothing would have clued me to the way he has been revealed to have behaved towards other girls and young women in this time period. Though in retrospect one of the first things he asked was, ‘how’s James’ which could easily be back translated to, ‘are you single yet?’?

We barely spoke really over the next while, I CBA to search but I bet there were maybe 2 emails between us until I next decided I wanted to go to London and have somewhere to stay for free. So I emailed him and I planned another 2 day trip around November 2012.
This trip was less fun than the previous two because at one point he left me in his living room for three hours while he went to his singing lesson and I sat reading while Bryarly sat watching ATLA on her laptop. That was weird.

Anyway. As a ‘friend’ and nothing more he wasn’t ever a real friend.

There’s so much more I could say but I basically stopped caring about him when he and Lindsey fell out because I’ve met Lindsey and she is lovely and my sister’s friend and after talking to her this summer I decided that I just couldn’t be bothered with Alex at all anymore.

It’s been so easy to believe how skeezy he is and so easy to unfriend him and unfollow him.

My heart goes out to all those affected by his actions and those of other previously trusted members of our community.

I only ever did one sketch for Harry Moon, scanned it in and traced it in photoshop, tidied it up, sent it to Alex and then suddenly it was on a t-shirt.

Still enjoying that A Thousand Hours is about youtube and not a girl.

Photoshoot from late last year, photos taken by Christine Hayter. Full gallery here!

These photos remind me so much of the posters that are included in the GLAM! show at TATE in Liverpool where I was today.

The whole show was themed around “The Performance of Style” which I think Alex really fits into. It’s mostly art and ephemera from the 1971-5 period on themes of glamour, camp, exaggerated identity, androgyny, eroticism and dandyism.

I know Alex fairly well and I know his persona is in some ways exaggerated for the fun of it, to be someone different from the crowd but to be himself too. Glam! seemed to be all about making a version of yourself that stood out.

Also, his new album is going to be pretty mint. I heard some of the songs in November and they’re swell.

:D

Silliness

Just want to comment for a bit on people who are disappointed with Stupid Stupid because they feel it lacks meaning.

On the one hand - I think it has a lovely message (embrace the flaws of the people you love) and just gets it across in a very silly way.

On the other hand …

I said I was releasing a song called Stupid Stupid. I spend every chart week on Twitter talking about how great I think Gangnam Style is. I spent a whole year making fun of Twilight, once ended a video wearing shiny gold pants, wrote a song with utterly meaningless lyrics about a piece of paper I found on the floor, ended my first album with a joke that literally only two people understood, wrote a page on the booklet of my second album that was about a duck lamp, I’m in a band that makes songs about a TV show, I made a music video in which I dated a robot who was jealous of a cardboard cutout of Karen Gillan and in the last twelve months I’ve worn a blonde wig, danced in front of a green screen, shot zombies in tights, bought a shirt that makes me look like a caveman and released a song about falling in love with a ghost.

I’m not trying to be flippant, but … what exactly were you expecting from this?

People keep comparing this to Forever Yours and saying Forever Yours was better, much more meaningful, the cause was more worthwhile etc. To me the cause remains the same. I want to do things my own way, without compromising myself to typical music industry practices. It was true last year and it’s clearly true now. I’m not forcing anyone to help: I’m merely letting people know this is what I’m doing. I’m a musician. I release songs. That’s what happens.

If you wanna get involved, I’d love to have you on board to help me out. If you don’t, I’m still going to do it anyway so accept it and do something else with your time - don’t get your knickers in a twist. It’s just a song. Calm down. Open a window.

And if you’d rather me just musically repeat myself over and over again, I think perhaps you’re looking for a different artist.

x

The other day, Alex played me some of his other yet-to-be-released music. There are some less silly songs coming too, don’t worry. :)

Also, Stupid Stupid is FUN.

If you haven’t heard it: the oldest song I’ve ever released, written in 2006 when I was 16, available on iTunes :)

Some phrases from this song have been stuck in my head recently. Also, MY PARROT :D
