Photoshoot from late last year, photos taken by Christine Hayter. Full gallery here!

These photos remind me so much of the posters that are included in the GLAM! show at TATE in Liverpool where I was today.

The whole show was themed around “The Performance of Style” which I think Alex really fits into. It’s mostly art and ephemera from the 1971-5 period on themes of glamour, camp, exaggerated identity, androgyny, eroticism and dandyism.

I know Alex fairly well and I know his persona is in some ways exaggerated for the fun of it, to be someone different from the crowd but to be himself too. Glam! seemed to be all about making a version of yourself that stood out.

Also, his new album is going to be pretty mint. I heard some of the songs in November and they’re swell.

:D

Silliness

Just want to comment for a bit on people who are disappointed with Stupid Stupid because they feel it lacks meaning.

On the one hand - I think it has a lovely message (embrace the flaws of the people you love) and just gets it across in a very silly way.

On the other hand …

I said I was releasing a song called Stupid Stupid. I spend every chart week on Twitter talking about how great I think Gangnam Style is. I spent a whole year making fun of Twilight, once ended a video wearing shiny gold pants, wrote a song with utterly meaningless lyrics about a piece of paper I found on the floor, ended my first album with a joke that literally only two people understood, wrote a page on the booklet of my second album that was about a duck lamp, I’m in a band that makes songs about a TV show, I made a music video in which I dated a robot who was jealous of a cardboard cutout of Karen Gillan and in the last twelve months I’ve worn a blonde wig, danced in front of a green screen, shot zombies in tights, bought a shirt that makes me look like a caveman and released a song about falling in love with a ghost.

I’m not trying to be flippant, but … what exactly were you expecting from this?

People keep comparing this to Forever Yours and saying Forever Yours was better, much more meaningful, the cause was more worthwhile etc. To me the cause remains the same. I want to do things my own way, without compromising myself to typical music industry practices. It was true last year and it’s clearly true now. I’m not forcing anyone to help: I’m merely letting people know this is what I’m doing. I’m a musician. I release songs. That’s what happens.

If you wanna get involved, I’d love to have you on board to help me out. If you don’t, I’m still going to do it anyway so accept it and do something else with your time - don’t get your knickers in a twist. It’s just a song. Calm down. Open a window.

And if you’d rather me just musically repeat myself over and over again, I think perhaps you’re looking for a different artist.

x

The other day, Alex played me some of his other yet-to-be-released music. There are some less silly songs coming too, don’t worry. :)

Also, Stupid Stupid is FUN.

If you haven’t heard it: the oldest song I’ve ever released, written in 2006 when I was 16, available on iTunes :)

Some phrases from this song have been stuck in my head recently. Also, MY PARROT :D

Kudos to whoever added the tutu and fishnets to my Parrot doodle on Alex’s Twitter Googgles thing.

Are you sad that Alex is releasing three tracks at once these days instead of a whole bunch of crazy remixes?

Well BE SAD NO MORE! Cause I totally did a mashup/remix of all three of them at once!

It’s only two minutes long because I got super bored of doing it. Also, it gets progressively weirder until by the end it’s actually quite terrifying (also cause I got bored)

Anyway yeah hope you enjoy it, and have fun picking out all the bits of future summer smash that I’ve turned into a hideous mutant!

Ahhhhhhhhh!
