There was this article in last week’s EW that this woman wrote that really pissed me off.

needlessly-defiant:

She was talking about how she was upset that her daughter really likes Zooey Deschanel because Zooey’s a bad feminist role model because she dresses very feminine and posts videos online of her playing ukulele and singing with JGL or whatever.

This “journalist” went on to say that she wanted her daughter to be into Lisbeth Salander instead because Lisbeth kicks ass and doesn’t take shit. Mostly, the article was about Lisbeth. Don’t get me wrong. Homegirl is one of my absolute heroes! She stands up for herself, and she’ll do whatever it takes to ensure justice. But she’s not inherently more feminist than Zooey.

BECAUSE, implying that traditional “femininity” cannot be feminist is one of the most sexist things I’ve ever heard of. If you are going to tell your fellow women that they need to be more “masculine” in order to be respected, you need to hand your feminist card over now. You’re done. You don’t understand feminism even in the slightest. And I’m sorry, but we’ve got way too much work to do to let you set us even further back in society.

Look, you don’t have to like Zooey Deschanel. I guess she irritates some people. Whatever. But this isn’t about her. At all. This is about a way of thinking that is incredibly poisonous to the efforts of the feminist movement.
